Job Introduction

BBC Southampton is the home of South Today the RTS award-winning television news programme for central Southern England and the highly ambitious Radio Solent serving an audience passionate about local issues and where they live. To support the Radio Solent team we are looking to appoint a part-time engineer on a continuing basis.

Role Responsibility
As a valuable member of the team you will be working on a shift basis, often under pressure and to tight deadlines. The role reports to the Team Leader and you will be joining a small and multi-skilled engineering team working across a range of engineering duties in television, radio and online. Whilst this role will be working in radio initially that may change over time. The ability to work unpredictable hours to service the needs of the output is essential.

Engineers are expected to react to system failures in an appropriate manner and to be able to prioritise their response according to transmission and business criticality. Maintenance and repair is largely at a systems level, but occasional repair of equipment down to component level will be necessary.

Are you the right candidate?
You should be qualified to degree level or equivalent, or have strong demonstrable equivalent knowledge and experience with traditional broadcast technologies and networked IT systems.  Applications are welcome from experienced broadcast engineers with substantial knowledge and experience of a live broadcast environment. Equally more recent graduates or ex-broadcast apprentices are welcome to apply; however in all cases broadcast engineering experience is essential. Training will be available for candidates that do not possess the full range of skills. You will have excellent team working and interpersonal skills and above all resilience.

You will be expected to have a positive and innovative attitude, applying new technology where appropriate.

The BBC takes safety seriously and a good knowledge of industry safety procedures in general and electrical safety testing in particular is required.
