The primary function of the Community Business and Sustainability Manager is to develop Winchester Radio's relationships with:

  • the local councils (parish, town, city and county);
  • local providers and commissioners of NHS services;
  • the Public Health functions within the above organisations;
  • local business/commercial networking groups;
  • local, independent businesses operating across the city;
  • the larger charities and social enterprises operating locally; and
  • the infrastructure support organisations for the VCSE sector operating locally,

resulting in collaborative projects generating additional and sustainable earned income for Winchester Radio.

The successful applicant will report to our Chair, and will work closely alongside the Board of Trustees to ensure that fundraising activity aligns with the Trustee Board's strategic plan.

This role is vital for taking the charity to the next stage in its development.

There is flexibility as to where the role is based; either working from home, based at our studios in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, or a combination of the two. The post will require travel in and around the Winchester area, and some meetings outside of normal working hours.

Fundraising and income generation

  • To lead the building and maintaining of business relationships with local public sector and VCSE organisations, and the local independent business community, with the aim of increasing collaborative working and the generation of sustainable income streams.
  • To produce and manage a clear and realistically weighted set of business prospects from these relationships.
  • To generate income of at least 150% of salary.
  • To maintain Winchester Radio's Contact Relationship Management database with up-to-date contact information of potential funders and details of all interactions with them, with full awareness of GDPR and charity procedures.
  • To work in collaboration with the wider Trustee Board and volunteer team in the development, implementation, and regular review of an overall fundraising strategy, encompassing all current and potential fundraising income streams, including earned income, grants, events, individual donations, local independent business on-air advertising and corporate sponsorship.


  • To gain an understanding of the work and interests of the local public sector and VCSE organisations, and how they might align with Winchester Radio's health, wellbeing and positive ageing objects.
  • To gain an understanding of the many local, independent businesses operating across the city and wider Winchester District, and how they might consider taking up paid on-air advertising to market their services to our target local, older audience.


  • To work alongside the Chair, Treasurer and wider team to help develop realistic and achievable budgets for collaborative projects with local public sector and VCSE organisations, and local independent businesses.
  • To brief the Trustee Board on income revenue secured.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • To develop strategies to enable Winchester Radio to better measure the impact of its work on the health & wellbeing of the local community, in support of continued collaborative working with, and income generation from, local public sector, VCSE organisation, and local independent businesses.
  • To gather and provide monitoring information and statistics as required.


  • To raise the profile and awareness of Winchester Radio, and utilise opportunities for growth, and collaborative working where appropriate.
  • To communicate the business development work, its outcomes, and successes within the wider volunteer team.
  • To recruit and train additional volunteers, as needed, to sustain and grow the business relationships that Winchester Radio has with local public, VCSE and business sector organisations.
  • To adhere to and implement relevant policies, including safeguarding, equal opportunities, diversity, and health & safety.

  • A good working knowledge of Winchester and an understanding of the challenges facing the older population of Winchester.
