Producer – Classic FM

This role reports to the Deputy Managing Editor, Classic FM

Overview of job

At a significant time for UK radio, we want a brilliant producer to join us in the year Classic FM celebrates its 30th anniversary. In the past year Classic FM has achieved its highest hours and share for 14 years (RAJAR Q4 2021), cemented its position as the biggest classical music brand online worldwide, and played classical music to millions of pets up and down the country on Bonfire Night!

Measures of success - in the first few months you would have:

  • Effectively produced a variety of programmes
  • Built great positive relationships with presenters and the production team, as well as with key people in the wider team at Global
  • Written for Classic FM programmes with support from those around you
  • Broadened your knowledge of classical music, if vital
  • Shown you know what you’re doing with Classic FM's playout system (Zetta)
  • Developed a critical ear for the programmes you work on, and be always on the look out for ways to improve them
  • Discovered how Classic FM uses GSelector to schedule its programmes
  • Come up with ideas on working with your presenters to grow Classic FM’s social media channels. You’ll also be working closely with Classic FM’s Senior Social Manager, to promote the programmes you work on
  • Shown knowledge of Global Player and how it works seamlessly with on-air output

Responsibilities of the role

  • Producing live radio programmes
  • Preparing content and scripting programmes
  • Leading and directing recording sessions with presenters
  • Editing recording sessions, effectively balancing timings, and loading them into Classic FM’s playout system
  • Taking an active part in team meetings and coming forward with suggestions for the station outside of the programmes you work on

What you will need

The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of the following:

  • Producing relevant radio programming presented by high-profile names, with clearly transferable skills that can be applied to Classic FM
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the range of music played on Classic FM and, ideally, the ability to schedule music using GSelector or equivalent software
  • Using Adobe Audition, or similar editing software, and the ability to lead and direct recording sessions
  • Driving a mixing desk and to using a radio studio to effectively produce pre-recorded and live output
  • Scripting programmes and demonstrate knowledge of writing for radio
  • Excelling under pressure, together with the desire to rise to the challenge of attracting listeners from our competitors
  • Showing an acute understanding of where Classic FM sits within the radio marketplace, of its target audience, and of what makes an excellent commercial radio station
  • Showing knowledge of the OFCOM broadcasting code
