Academy FM Folkestone is a registered charity and FM community radio station broadcasting to the Folkestone area, with education being a primary aspect of its work. The station is based in the Folkestone Academy School, where it occupies an office and two small studios.  There is a satellite studio in central Folkestone.  Academy FM has a small team of staff and an active group of adult volunteers, including Folkestone Academy students (Yrs. 5-13) who are trained to broadcast; the station has won numerous Young Audio Awards and Community Radio Awards. In addition to the core work of working with Academy students and running the radio station, the charity runs funded educational projects which often reach over 800 children a year.  Academy FM Folkestone is supported by a mixture of core grants, project grants, and commercial income, and is overseen by a board of Trustees who ensure that its charitable aims are met.


David Sharp, the Station Manager, who set up the radio station 11 years ago has decided to move on.  We are looking for one or more individuals who can take over his role, as a single person or job-share that undertakes the responsibilities outlined in the Job Description:


Job Title:             Station Manager

Reporting to:     Chair of Board of Trustees

Based at:             Folkestone Academy, Academy Lane, Folkestone CT19 5FP

Salary:                  £27,000 - £31,000 per year (pro-rata if offered as a job-share)

Hours:                  37.5 per week full-time

Annual leave:    25 days per year plus public holidays

Start date:           Ideally 1st  July 2022, but negotiable for the right candidate(s)


Job Description


Creating ideas, researching and writing project proposals for funding bids, and creating associated budgets. Project amounts have been between £500-£35,000, commonly £3,000-£12,000. Academy FM has often raised £45,000-60,000 a year in project grants.

Maintaining relations with regular funders who support Academy FM’s core operation. This includes regular reporting to funders, and liaising with them. These relationships currently earn £42,000 a year.

Overseeing the commercial sales process and the Account Manager (salesperson). This has typically earned around £25,000 a year.

Liaising with events organisers, business supporters and staff for sponsored Outside Broadcasts.

Note: For Academy FM to continue to deliver the work it does, and pay the people it employs, it needs continual and effective fundraising. To keep your job, and to ensure others keep theirs, you need to be able to raise money, deliver life-changing projects,  and manage the budgets and delivery.


Project management

Managing funded projects (often several at once), including recruiting, training and overseeing project staff. Liaising with schools where these projects are delivered.

Delivering projects. This often involves work in classrooms in a number of schools (Secondary and Primary), working directly with KS2-5, with the majority of project work being KS2-3.

Managing project staffing.

Reporting, and financial management of projects, including purchasing of items, paying staff and suppliers, record-keeping, and liaising with the part-time Accounts Clerk.


Work with Folkestone Academy

Training pupils to present radio shows, ranging from Yr5-13. This includes working with pupils with SEN, disabilities and other needs, working around the school timetable.

Liaising with teaching departments on work agreed with the Academy; this has previously involved recording radio drama, work on literacy projects, employability initiatives, offering Internships to 6th Formers, producing audio for events such as Book Day or Science Week, and training minimum numbers of pupils of set ages to broadcast.

Ensuring Academy FM operates as required in a Safeguarding environment, with regards to DBS checks, record-keeping, and related procedures

Liaising with Facilities staff to ensure Academy FM’s continued operation


Financial management

Oversee the finances of the whole operation, working with the Accounts Clerk

Allocate spend on salaries and items to correct project budgets. Authorising payroll and other payments.

Managing the targets and commission for sales staff

Liaising with Accountants to assist in the production of annual accounts.


Radio station management

Ultimate responsibility for what is broadcast, and that Academy FM complies with its Ofcom License.

Training new volunteers alongside other broadcast staff (currently there is an Apprentice Broadcast Assistant, who also presents the Breakfast Show)

Working alongside other staff to manage the broadcast schedule.

Manage relations with adult volunteers

All aspects of technical audio production, including programme-making, commercial production, audio branding.

Organising, producing and presenting Outside Broadcasts, including operating PA systems and commentating on events.

On-site management and operation of specialist software for radio playout and editing. Currently we use RCS Selector (i.e. pre-Zetta).

Overseeing the operation and maintenance of the studios in association with the retained radio engineer, including fault-finding and repair of equipment.

Technical support for presenters and staff

Website editing

Overseeing social media, and producing content for it, including some image creation and editing.

Presenting radio programmes

Interviewing, and leading discussions, mainly on local topics.

Organising events, or being part of the organisation of them. These have previously involved live music fundraising nights, business receptions, and school events.

Standing in for all other staff when they are sick or on Leave.


General management

Reporting to Trustees (operational, regulatory and financial).

Maintaining payment and re-application for Licenses (Ofcom, PRS/PPL) and application for new licenses where necessary (eg SSDAB).

Overseeing staff. This has previously included: Recruitment; employment; issuing contracts; payroll; appraisal; disciplinary action; settlement; redundancy.

Overseeing the training of Apprentices, and liaising with Training Provider. Sourcing apprenticeship funding.


Person Specification

  • Educated to degree-level. Experience of teaching and/or delivering educational projects
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in radio broadcasting, and the management of it
  • Extensive experience of project management, incorporating applications for funding, project design and delivery, on time and on budget
  • Experience of management of staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills with funders, colleagues, young people and the general public
  • Excellent grasp of finance and ability to control budgets and report on financial matters
  • Technical knowledge of radio and broadcasting, including audio production
