Media and Communications Officer

Main Purpose
This role will be working within the Traffic Scotland Control Centre at South Queensferry, on the Traffic Scotland Operations and Infrastructure Services Contract to deliver a coordinated media and communications service to the public 24/7, 365 days a year.

Additional Information
The general working pattern will be a shift pattern alternating between 6:00am – 2:00pm and 2.00pm to 10:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Salary: £21,840.

Reporting to the INRIX Scotland Manager, the Media and Communications Officer will be required to assist during times of high demand within our control room and therefore may be requested to work later or different hours to accommodate during the normal working week or at the weekend.  This could include working shifts, 8 or 12 hours, dayshift and nightshift.

This requires the person to be flexible.  The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate that they meet this prerequisite.

Tasks

  • Supporting the Engagement Manager in securing the delivery of the contract requirements with specific emphasis on social media planning and development of the social media service
  • Supporting the Control Room team in ensuring that control room staff have all necessary information about planned events, roadworks and anything which has an impact on the Scottish Trunk Road network.
  • Promote the Traffic Scotland Service work on the Road Network to the public and media in an open, friendly and informative way.
  • Be proactive and collaborative with stakeholders by highlighting good news, new initiatives, improved service, faster completion of Operations or Works Contracts and the planning or major activities.
  • Where unplanned incidents are occurring, engage with wider media and provide timeous media updates and undertake pre-recorded and live broadcast messages providing the details of the Unplanned Incidents.
  • Keep the travelling public up to date with any issues affecting their journey on the Scottish Road Network through the Traffic Scotland website, mobile sites and applications and social media outlets
  • Update the Traffic Scotland social media services providing two-way communication with its followers.
  • Based within the control room providing direct liaison with the day-to-day operations team to ensure information out to the public is accurate
  • Liaison with our in-house radio broadcaster to ensure information out to the public is accurate.
  • Maintain editorial standards within Traffic Scotland service to protect the brand
  • Create copy for press releases, web pages, reports and other organisational statements.
  • Ensure that the Traffic Scotland website and social media presence continue to develop so that they support the brand presence and remain useful to the stakeholders and public.
  • Support corporate communications activities as required.
  • Deal with Client and customer enquiries on a day to day basis.
  • Write quality responses to complaints, enquiries and requests for information.
  • Ensure compliance with the contractual requirements
  • Engage with the public to drive customer engagement, performance and improve the business
  • Develop and maintain social media reporting to internal and external stakeholders

Essential Skills, experience and qualifications (Needs to know):

  • Graduate in marketing and/or social media qualifications
  • Experience in media communications or related discipline
  • Competent in Media handling and marketing
  • Excellent presentation and IT skills
  • Excellent writing, communication and organisational skills
  • Confident in dealing with a range of people at all levels
  • Customer focused and able to deliver an excellent service to members of the public
  • Able to work under pressure and make informed decisions
  • To be both a team worker and to operate alone
  • To prioritise workload and meet contractual target
  • Able to travel to external locations occasionally if required
  • Supports and contributes to continuous improvement.
  • Desirable, Knowledge of the Scottish Trunk Road network
