Please note: This role is voluntary and fully remote.

Due to the amount of training involved and the nature of this position, we are looking for long-term volunteers who can provisionally volunteer with us for more than 6 months.

Role Introduction

Radio Cardiff is the only Ofcom-regulated community radio station based in the biggest city in Wales. We are on 98.7 FM across the city, online and now on DAB as well. We are looking for new volunteers to join our news team as Broadcast Journalists.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in radio, news and current affairs, and wants to kick start their career in the industry. We also welcome candidates with some experience in the industry and would like to commit some spare time to volunteer with us.

Like other community radio stations across the UK, we are run entirely by volunteers, hence why this position is unpaid. However, by committing some time with us, you will meet some of the brightest young journalists in Cardiff and build up your own contacts in the industry. Throughout your time with our news team, you will have plenty of opportunities to produce your own content and build your portfolio.

We are proud of what we do, and we do take our work seriously. Radio Cardiff has one of the biggest local news teams for a community radio station in the UK and many existing volunteers in our news team are already working in major news and media outlets across radio, TV and digital. Some of our previous volunteers moved on to local TV stations, PR & Communications agencies and major media outlets including the BBC, ITV, Global, GB News and more. We will also provide training and support, sharing job opportunities to help you go further.

Role Responsibility

Your responsibilities include:

• Write, record, edit and upload local news bulletins.
• Research suitable stories for our bulletins, including liaising with external agencies when necessary.
• Assist Day News Editors when required.
• Occasionally cover for other Broadcast Journalists

You will be working with other Broadcast Journalists and interns, and reporting to Head of News and Day News Editors. Day News Editors will directly oversee and supervise your work, as well as making editorial decisions where necessary. You will be writing and recording local news bulletins on a weekly basis (subject to the availability of slots we have). However, sometimes you may be required to cover for others so some flexibility will be hugely appreciated.

The Ideal Candidate

• You should be able to demonstrate an interest in culture, sport, lifestyles and politics in Cardiff and Wales, including the difference they have from their English equivalents.
• You should be passionate about radio and podcasts. You have already been consuming news content on either radio, TV or newspapers, and you are familiar with how news is presented on different platforms.
• You should be confident in communicating, and be able to produce engaging, high-standard news-led content with a focus on Cardiff and South Wales.
• You are familiar with social media and major news sources in Wales
• You will have the dedication to be able to research and produce bulletins at least once a week and are also willing to cover for other newsreaders occasionally, subject to mutual agreements.
• You will be able to work calmly and accurately. You are willing to learn basic editing skills, Ofcom regulations and work with external news sources.
• You have a basic set up with a suitable microphone and access to the internet.

Next Steps

There will be an induction session shortly after the application process is completed. After that, the training and shadowing process will take at least 4 weeks, followed by an assessment. Successful candidates will then become cover newsreaders, covering bulletins across the week. When there is a new "slot" available, they will be invited to take it over on a permanent basis.

Successful candidates will then be invited to attend a short interview online. The interview is to be held provisionally on one evening in early February.
