Job description

You will have editorial control over the news output at JACKfm.

Your main roles will be to research, interview and script local news stories and to edit and present both live and pre-recorded bulletins.

As well as providing coaching and support to our Broadcast Journalist and freelancers, you will also create regular content for the JACK news and social media pages.

This is a full-time role for 9 months, starting April/May 2023.

About you/your responsibilities

The JACK news team is small but mighty. In 2022 we received five nominations in the Commercial Radio News Awards, including ‘News Team of the Year’, ‘Reporter of the Year’ and ‘Best News Story’.

You’ll be expected to come up with and develop engaging and original stories that are relevant to the JACKfm target listener and in-keeping with the brand. Local knowledge would be an advantage.

We’re looking for somebody with a great voice, who’s also passionate, curious and creative with their wording and audio editing.

With experience of at least two years in a radio newsroom - and excellent editorial judgement – you will understand the local news agenda and be able to reflect this in JACKfm’s coverage.

You will also get the opportunity to get out and report ‘in the field’, attend press briefings or media days and respond to breaking news incidents.

As well as producing hourly bulletins, you will look for opportunities to create extended award-nomination-worthy news features and consider opportunities to accompany the story with audio/visuals for our website and social pages.

You will develop and maintain relationships with local contacts and manage all incoming press releases/opportunities to the JACK newsroom.

Duties will also include helping to organise the team rota and freelance cover when needed.

Nobody at JACKfm does just one job, which means there’s always an opportunity to expand your responsibilities. We’re very interested to hear if you have skills in other areas too. You may even get the chance to present a show on one of our stations!

Balance and credibility are important to us at JACK. You will be expected to understand OFCOM's regulatory standards re The Broadcasting Code, around 'due impartiality and due accuracy' 'elections and referendums' and 'privacy'. You will also understand the core legal issues of Defamation and Contempt, plus obligations towards fairness and a 'right of reply'.

If you’d like to join the JACK family – and have a Journalism degree and Media Law qualification – please get in touch!

Send your CV and a recent MP3 demo – including a news bulletin and an example of your reporting skills – to our News Editor at jo.summerbell@jackfm.co.uk

JACK Media Oxfordshire Ltd is an equal opportunities employer, we actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds in order to shape the future success of our growing audio business.
